BEYOND THE VERNAL EQUINOX COMES
THE BEAUTY OF SUMMER:

Now that the summer solstice (the longest day of sun light for the year) has gracefully slipped by, summer is the season when the sun shines highest in the sky, the days are longer and the nights are shorter. The summer solstice is an astronomical event that happens each year when the Sun's apparent position in the sky reaches its northern most extreme. The name stemmed from the Latin words, sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstice, the Sun seems to almost have stood still for that brief moment on its journey toward the northern hemisphere, the apparent movement of the Sun's path north comes to a stop before reversing direction back to the fall equinoxe. The solstices, together with the equinoxes, are connected with the seasons. In our culture they are considered to start or separate the four seasons.

As the heat of summer sets in, all living plants go into a summer state of dormancy. At this time and season, why not take some quality time to bask in the sun and walk around your personal domain looking to find a special place to add that rewarding garden or structural landscape investment that will last a lifetime.

If you need that extended vacation because work or your children’s summer activities are keeping you close to home, now would be a good time to make your back yard into a great vacation spot for the evenings and weekends.

Here might be some ideas: a tranquil water garden, a cool shade baring tree or trellis, a relaxing patio with a fire pit for roasting marshmallows in the evening, meandering pathways, a secluded well planted oasis for a hammock, decorative stone benches or stone seating walls. A colorful seasonal changing perennial garden along with enticing summer annuals would also help add beauty to your home and landscape by attracting the ruby throated humming birds or many different butterflies and useful insects.

Also re-mulching your existing plantings is beneficial for holding moisture in the soil for the plants’ new root growth from the spring. It also helps repress those nasty weed seeds we all don’t like. Weeds from last year have scattered their seeds by means of wind, birds and some rodents, so one natural way to stop them from germinating is to block out the sun. Just a light dressing of fresh mulch is all you need.

The summer is ideal for landscape construction of any kind. If you are having trouble with ideas on what can help enhance your gardens or hardscapes, please contact us, your green specialist for our professional advice.
